Rosenwald School Network Meeting

When: March 2, 2018 from 9:00am to 4:00pm

We're hosting our Rosenwald School Network Meeting Friday, March 2 at the Moton Museum in Farmville from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We'll be exploring the history of Rosenwald schools in Virginia alongside guest speakers and Rosenwald school alumni and sharing some early findings from phase one of our statewide Rosenwald school survey. There will also be an opportunity for you to get hands-on training with our mobile Rosenwald school survey tool, network with other Rosenwald school advocates and participate in a Moton Museum exhibition tour!

9:00 a.m. – Coffee and Registration

9:30 a.m. – Welcome and opening remarks from Preservation Virginia

9:45 a.m. – Welcome from the Moton Museum and the Institute of Archaeology, Longwood University

10:00 a.m. – Opening lecture: Preserving and Interpreting the Robert Russa Moton School

11:00 a.m. – Moton Museum staff-lead exhibition tour

11:45 a.m. – Lunch and networking

1:00 p.m. – Historic African American Schools Survey: Using Preservation Virginia’s mobile survey tool

1:30 p.m. – Longwood University students’ observations from the field 

1:50 p.m. – Rosenwald Schools around the Commonwealth: Scrabble School

2:10 p.m. – Rosenwald Schools around the Commonwealth: Campbell County Training School Complex (Preservation Pitch winner 2017)

2:30 p.m. – Film Screening: Lorenzo Dickerson’s Albemarle’s Classrooms

3:30 p.m. – Closing remarks and networking

4:00 p.m. – Adjourn

Farmville, Virginia's former Moton High School, now a National Historic Landmark and museum, is a civil rights training ground, rooted in Prince Edward County's 1951-1964 fight for student freedom. The Moton Museum is the student birthplace of America’s civil rights revolution.
