Virginia Rosenwald School Network Meeting

When: May 11, 2018 from 9:00am to 4:00pm

We're hosting our Rosenwald School Network Meeting Friday, May 11 at the Moton Museum in Farmville from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We'll be exploring the history of Rosenwald schools in Virginia alongside guest speakers and Rosenwald school alumni and sharing some early findings from phase one of our statewide Rosenwald school survey. There will also be an opportunity for you to get hands-on training with our mobile Rosenwald school survey tool, network with other Rosenwald school advocates and participate in a Moton Museum exhibition tour!

10:00 – Keynote lecture: The Road to Moton: Virginia’s Historic African American Schools, Marc Wagner, architectural historian, Virginia Department of Historic Resources

10:45 – Terry Ammons, principal, StudioAmmons, on the preservation and interpretation of the Robert Russa Moton School

11:00 – Self-guided Moton Museum exhibition tour

11:45 – Lunch (provided)/networking

1:00 – Rosenwald Schools around the Commonwealth: Scrabble School

1:20 – Rosenwald Schools around the Commonwealth: Campbell County Training School Complex

1:40 – Historic African American Schools Survey: Using Preservation Virginia’s Mobile Survey Tool

2:15 – Film screening of Lorenzo Dickerson’s Albemarle’s Classrooms

3:15 – Closing remarks/networking

4:00 – Adjourn

Farmville, Virginia's former Moton High School, now a National Historic Landmark and museum, is a civil rights training ground, rooted in Prince Edward County's 1951-1964 fight for student freedom. The Moton Museum is the student birthplace of America’s civil rights revolution.
